Classroom Language

Hello, my dear student!

Hello, my dear student!

In every English class the teacher says the same short sentences: Open your book. Listen. Work in pairs. And good students ask the same short questions: Can you repeat that, please? What does it mean?

Today you will learn this classroom English. After this lesson you can follow any English teacher, and you never need to sit in silence when you don’t understand. Even in the IELTS Speaking test you can say “Can you repeat the question, please?”

The teacher

Instructions

The teacher tells you what to do. The sentence starts with a verb, and there is no “you” before it. Please makes it softer.

  • Look at the board.(Doskaga qarang.)
  • Close your notebooks, please.(Daftarlaringizni yoping, iltimos.)

You

Questions for help

When you don’t understand, ask. Short questions with Can you…?, What…? and How…? are polite and easy.

  • Can you say it again, please?(Yana bir marta ayta olasizmi?)
  • How do you pronounce this word?(Bu soʻz qanday talaffuz qilinadi?)

Everyone

Polite words

Please when you ask, thank you when someone helps, sorry for a mistake, and excuse me before you start to speak.

  • Excuse me, I have a question.(Kechirasiz, savolim bor.)
  • Thank you very much.(Katta rahmat.)

Remember!

Teacher instructions start with a verb: Open, Listen, Write. To ask for help, start with Can you…?, What…? or How…?

What the teacher says

Tap each sentence to hear it.

    an honest answer

In the classroom

Listen to Aziz. He doesn’t understand everything, so he asks.

  1. Ms Green

Good morning, everyone. Open your books at page 8.

  2. Aziz

Sorry, can you repeat that, please?

  3. Ms Green

Page 8. Now look at the picture.

  4. Aziz

Excuse me, what does “picture” mean?

  5. Ms Green

It’s a photo or a drawing. Look, here!

  6. Aziz

    Oh, I see. Thank you!

Aziz doesn’t sit in silence. Two short questions, and now he understands everything.

Mistakes I hear every day

  • Not: Repeat again, please.Say: Can you repeat that, please?(Qaytarib aytib bera olasizmi?)

“Repeat” already means “say again”, so “again” is extra. A question with Can you… is more polite.

  • Not: What is mean “desk”?Say: What does “desk” mean?

Questions about meaning use does … mean.

  • Not: How to say “daftar” in English?Say: How do you say “daftar” in English?

An English question needs do + you after How.

  • Not: I am not understand.Say: I don’t understand.(Tushunmadim.)

With a verb like understand, use don’t, not am not.

  • Not: Teacher, I have a question.Say: Excuse me, Ms Green. I have a question.

In English we don’t usually call a teacher “Teacher”. Say Excuse me and use their name: Ms Green, Mr Karimov.
