Review: Building Better Sentences

Hello, my dear student!

Hello, my dear student!

You have finished Module 1. You can now name the job of every word, put words in the right order, make verbs agree with long subjects, ask both kinds of question, build word families, use natural word pairs, avoid the ten classic mistakes, and describe the whole Academic IELTS test.

This lesson is a review. Each part checks two or three lessons, and four parts are real IELTS practice: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. At the end you see an estimated band for each skill. It is a rough guide from a few questions, not an official score.

If a part feels hard, go back to that lesson and write the mistake in your mistake notebook. Then Module 2 will feel much easier.

Module 1 in eight ideas

Lesson 1

Parts of speech

Noun (a thing or idea), verb (an action), adjective (describes a noun), adverb (describes a verb: how, when, how often).

  • The careful (adj) student (noun) checks (verb) her answers carefully (adv).

Lesson 2

Word order

Subject → verb → object → place → time. Frequency adverbs before the main verb, after be. Nothing between the verb and its object.

  • I often meet my friends in the park on Sundays.
  • She is always on time.

Lesson 3

Subject–verb agreement

Find the real subject: the price of books is; the number of cars has; everyone knows; people are.

  • The number of students has increased.

Lesson 4

Subject and object questions

Who called you? (no did: who is the subject). Who did you call? (did: who is the object).

  • What happened?
  • What did you say?

Lesson 5

Word families

develop → development → developing; danger → dangerous → dangerously. Ask which job the gap needs, then choose the ending.

  • There was a sharp rise. = It rose sharply.

Lesson 6

Collocations

make a decision, do research, heavy traffic, pay attention, play a role, raise awareness.

  • Parents play an important role in education.

Lesson 7

The ten mistakes

I agree; he or she; a / an; information; he goes; I am 20; really like; listen to; do you…?; better, not more better.

  • My sister is a nurse. She works at night.

Lesson 8

Academic IELTS at a glance

Listening 30 min, Reading 60, Writing 60 (Task 1 ≥150 words, Task 2 ≥250), Speaking 11–14. Overall band = the average, rounded to a whole or half band.

  • 5 + 4.5 + 4.5 + 4 = 18 → 18 ÷ 4 = band 4.5

Remember!

If an idea is not clear, open that lesson again: every lesson stays open.
